Allen Caught Kelly, Mahomes Kept Pace With Brady, and Indy Fans Caught Feelings
Before You Clock In: Everything Sunday Did, and One More Game Tonight.
Football hangover? Same. Here's everything you missed, and stick around, because last call is tonight.
Week 6 gave us a long-awaited return, a winless team that finally isn't, two kicks that ended games with nothing left on the clock and a Sunday night that Green Bay put away early. Here's what you missed, or what you watched and are still processing.
Lambeau closed early on Dallas
The Packers set the tone on the very first drive of Sunday night. They went 90 yards and finished it with Jordan Love's 9-yard touchdown pass to Matthew Golden, and they never looked back. By halftime it was 17-0, and Dallas had gone a whole first half without scoring for the first time since 2021. Green Bay picked off Dak Prescott twice before the break, once by Evan Williams and once by rookie Brandon Cisse, and cruised to a 23-13 win for its third straight victory.
Golden's night deserves its own paragraph. He finished with over 100 receiving yards and that touchdown, which is a great night by any measure. He also dropped two passes that would have been touchdowns. So it was a big night with a couple of "oh no" moments mixed in, and the Packers will happily take that trade. Green Bay is 4-2. Dallas is 2-4 and probably watching film this morning with the lights low.
Caleb is back, and he didn't miss a beat
Caleb Williams missed three games with a hamstring injury. On Sunday in Atlanta he looked like a guy who had spent those three weeks counting the minutes. He completed his first 12 passes, threw a touchdown to Colston Loveland on the opening drive and finished with over 300 yards in a 31-23 win over the Falcons.
It wasn't all smooth. Chicago led 31-7 before Atlanta made a late push and got within one score. Then cornerback Kyler Gordon, playing his first game of the season, sealed it with a strip-sack of Michael Penix Jr. The Bears are 4-2. Williams said afterward he'd been "itching" on the sideline, so consider that itch scratched.
The Titans finally won, and Indy did not take it well
Tennessee arrived in Indianapolis without a win. The Colts led 13-0 at halftime, and for a while the afternoon looked routine. Then the Titans ripped off 20 unanswered points, helped by three Colts turnovers and two big special teams plays. Indy tied it late, but Joey Slye hit two field goals in the final minutes, and Tennessee left with a 26-20 win, its first of the season.
The crowd let everyone hear about it. ESPN's Stephen Holder reported that scattered boos grew into "Fire Ballard" chants aimed at general manager Chris Ballard by the end of the game. Coach Shane Steichen didn't push back. "I don't blame them for booing one freaking bit," he said. Indy is 2-4, and nobody needs us to explain how that locker room feels this morning.
Two guys who belong in the same sentence as legends
Josh Allen is now standing right next to Jim Kelly in the Bills record book. His scrambling 12-yard touchdown pass to Keon Coleman in the third quarter tied Kelly's franchise record for touchdown passes. Buffalo still had to sweat it out in Las Vegas, and James Cook's late touchdown run put them ahead for good in a 33-30 win. The Bills are 5-1.
In Kansas City, Patrick Mahomes earned his 100th regular-season win in his 131st start. That ties Tom Brady for the fewest starts needed to get there. The Chiefs beat the Chargers 22-6 without their top two receivers and are 5-0. Mahomes' first reaction was a joke: "When did Tom lose another game?" Fair question.
Zeros on the clock
If you like your football with a side of chest pain, two games delivered. In Cleveland, the Browns beat the Ravens 13-10 when kicker Andre Szmyt hit a 37-yard field goal on the final snap. Across the ocean at Wembley, C.J. Stroud threw an end-zone interception that let Jacksonville tie it. Then he led one more drive, and Ka'imi Fairbairn hit a 49-yarder as time expired for a 34-31 Texans win. Both kickers went home heroes. Everyone else went home needing a nap.
Also worth a toast
Carolina handled Philadelphia 25-14, and Pittsburgh needed overtime to beat Tampa Bay 26-19.
Last Call
Week 6 isn't quite done with us. Washington visits San Francisco for Monday Night Football at 8:15 PM ET, and the 49ers will be without Nick Bosa, which takes a big piece out of their pass rush. Receiver Stefon Diggs is questionable for Washington with a hamstring injury, so keep an eye on the final injury report before kickoff. Get through the workday, because there's still one more game before Week 6 is over.
That's the Sunday recap. Hydrate, stretch, and we'll see you back here when Week 7 shows up.
