Final Auburn stuns No. 1 Georgia and BYU edges No. 2 Notre Dame on a historic day of upsets
College football has never had a Saturday quite like this one. Five of the top eight teams in the AP poll lost on the same day for the first time since the poll began in 1936, according to ESPN Research, and the top two teams in the country both went down for the first time in a regular season since 2012, the Associated Press reported.
The biggest jolt came in Athens. Unranked Auburn beat No. 1 Georgia 27-24 when Alex McPherson made a 34-yard field goal as time expired, according to the AP. Georgia had tied it late, but Gunner Stockton fumbled near midfield with under a minute left, and a Georgia roughing-the-passer penalty helped set up the kick. Byrum Brown ran for 115 yards and a touchdown for first-year coach Alex Golesh's Tigers. It came one week after the previous No. 1, Texas, lost to Oklahoma.
Then in Provo, No. 8 BYU beat No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24. Bear Bachmeier threw the go-ahead touchdown pass to Walker Lyons with 1:47 left, and he ran for two scores and caught another, the AP reported. CJ Carr drove the Irish to the BYU 9, but his last throw into the end zone fell incomplete, ending Notre Dame's 16-game winning streak. BYU is 6-0 and Notre Dame falls to 6-1.
That finish is already drawing scrutiny. The Big 12, whose crew worked the game, said early Sunday that one second should have been put back on the clock after the final incompletion, which would have given Notre Dame one more play, ESPN's Adam Rittenberg reported. The conference said it will review its end-of-game officiating process before next week.
Final Tennessee smothers Alabama, 26-10, as the Tide lose two in a row
Tennessee VolunteersAlabama Crimson Tide
No. 14 Tennessee handled No. 6 Alabama 26-10 at Neyland Stadium, according to the Associated Press, and Tennessee fans stormed the field afterward, ESPN reported. DeSean Bishop ran for 159 yards and two touchdowns, most of it after halftime, and his 5-yard score capped a fourth-quarter drive that ate up more than nine minutes.
The Tennessee defense did the rest. Alabama managed about 200 yards, turned the ball over four times and converted only two of 13 third downs, the AP reported. Keelon Russell scored the Tide's only touchdown on a run but threw two interceptions. Alabama played again without receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams.
It is the first time since 2007 that Alabama has lost back-to-back regular-season games, according to the AP, after last week's loss to Georgia. Tennessee is 6-1. Our game preview has the background on the rivalry.
Final Rays tie the ALCS at 2-2 as Cleveland errors prove costly
Tampa Bay RaysCleveland GuardiansJunior Caminero, Rays 3B
Tampa Bay is level in the American League Championship Series. The Rays beat the Guardians 7-3 in a cold Game 4 at Progressive Field on Saturday night, according to the Associated Press, after the game had been rained out Friday.
The Rays' top hitters finally broke through. Junior Caminero's double in the sixth put Tampa Bay ahead, and in the seventh a Jonathan Aranda single skipped under the glove of Cleveland right fielder Chase DeLauter, letting two runs score. Aranda, hitless in the first three games, finished with three hits, and Yandy Díaz added a two-run homer in the ninth, ESPN's Jorge Castillo reported. Nick Martinez allowed one run over five-plus innings.
Game 5 is today at 5 PM ET in Cleveland on TBS and truTV, with Drew Rasmussen listed to start for Tampa Bay against Cleveland's Parker Messick, according to ESPN. The series then moves to Tampa Bay for Game 6 on Monday at 8 PM ET and, if needed, Game 7 on Tuesday. The winner meets Milwaukee in the World Series starting Friday.
Philadelphia made it official on Saturday afternoon: Jalen Hurts is on injured reserve because of a blood clot in his calf, ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported. He will miss at least the next four games, through the Eagles' bye in Week 10, and the report said the call on his return will come from his own medical team. Tanner McKee starts today at 1 PM ET against Carolina, and Saquon Barkley has already been ruled out.
In Chicago, Caleb Williams is still officially listed as questionable with a hamstring injury for the Bears' 1 PM ET game at Atlanta. Sources told ESPN and NFL Network that the Bears plan to start him after a full week of practice, but that is a report, not a team announcement. The official word comes with inactives, due about 90 minutes before kickoff. Baltimore has already ruled out Lamar Jackson with an ankle injury for its 1 PM ET game at Cleveland, according to the team's injury report, and Tyler Huntley starts again.
Week 6 opens at 9:30 AM ET in London, where Houston plays Jacksonville. New England, which activated A.J. Brown from injured reserve, hosts the Jets at 1 PM ET, ESPN's Mike Reiss reported. The Chargers visit Kansas City at 4:25 PM ET, and Dallas is at Green Bay tonight at 8:20 PM ET on NBC.
